Composer Nicholas Britell (The Big Short) began composing the music for Moonlight before he had seen the film. The script alone inspired his first compositions.
“There’s true poetry in the way Barry (Jenkins) conceived this movie. There is beauty, intimacy, tenderness and sensitivity to many of the scenes from the script.” Britell said.
He first composed ‘Chiron’s Theme’ which features throughout the film. Britell describes the process of composing the main theme.
“On top of the piano a sparse violin plays in counterpoint. I wanted the harmonies to feel like they were exploring emotions at the same time, much like Chiron explores his emotions over the course of the story.”
It was very much a collaborative process between writer and director. Months after the film was completed Britell and Jenkins met in Britell’s Lincoln Centre studio in New York to experiment with different and unconventional musical possibilities.
Britell was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Score. Here is a sneak peek into some of the music from the film.
