Culture Street

Nothing says curl up on the sofa after a day of exhausting festivities like a Marian Keyes book. The best excuse ever for pouring yourself a glass of wine and indulging in a little ‘me’ time.

Stella Sweeney is an ordinary mum living in Dublin with her husband and two children. One day she attempts a good deed which results in a car accident. Mannix Taylor, the driver of the Range Rover she has hit, is furious. The connection between the two is palpable and they soon meet again in even worse circumstances.

Shortly after the accident Stella contracts a rare disease, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which leaves her paralysed and in ICU. She has lost speech and movement. Her disease is so rare that no one seems to quite know how to treat it. Alone, lying in bed in the cold ICU Stella thinks mostly about her children, Jeremy and Betsy, both angst ridden teenagers.

Stella’s husband Ryan is having to manage on his own and every time he visits he seems more frazzled. Stella can communicate her frustration with no one until she is assigned a neurologist. Mannix and Stella meet again. He teaches her how to communicate through blinking. Months pass and Stella begins to recover but her family is in disarray and Mannix threatens to tear apart her domestic haven.

A book that sparkles and will add warmth to your Christmas this year. Witty and wonderful. You won’t be able to put it down.
